Tiffany - a day in the studio

Sometimes you meet people that you know are going to accomplish great things in their life.

They are so full of passion and you can see the creativity just oozing from them.

That... is my new friend Tiffany Carlen Hurd.

Tiffany is the owner of Tiffie, LLC. She took an idea to reality and is taking it across the country.

When she isn't working her magic with her Tiffie Sleeves and her amazing scarves....she is working on another passion.

Her music.

Tiffany has a voice that might just take you by surprise. Originally from New Jersey, her voice is as country as can be. Sultry is probably the word I would use to describe her voice.

What started with a few verses and a chorus, became an amazing and empowering song. With the help of Jesse Jennings, she made her dream a reality.

I know I have said it before, but seriously, I have the best job in the world. I am so honored that I was able to be a part of her special day. The new single is titled "It's a Girl Thing".

Get ready world, Tiffany is ready to take over the music industry!

Tiffany and Jesse did all of their recording at Fort Worth Sound. "Bart Rose awarded "Producer of the Year 2011" by the readers of FW WEEKLY MAGAZINE."

Bart did such an amazing job. It was truly incredible watching him work. I cannot wait to hear the final product!

Shooting on Location - Where should we go?

One day I will have my own fancy loft style studio, located next to a fabulous park and garden and location will never be an issue.

however...this is today and for now, I shoot on location.

What does this mean?

This means that your session will occur outdoors at a location of your choice. I always encourage my clients to choose a location that is significant to them. It could be your backyard, it could be your parents farm house, maybe the local park where you got engaged. Regardless, I want the location to feel special to you. If I say "hey, let's go shoot down at the stockyards" and you are a very chic city girl...that is not going to be the best option for you.

Choose a location that is unique and fun and something that fits your style.

For me...the perfect location is an open field with nothing but overgrown grass and a bright blue sky.

For you...maybe it's super funky and urban.

So what happens when you just can't think of anywhere to go? Well first of all, i'm not sure I buy that. However, for arguments sake...we'll go with that. In that case, I have a list of my "go-to" locations that I will provide to you.

Just remember, the purpose of your pictures is to remember this point in time, this chapter in your story, so let's make it fabulous and find the PERFECT setting to tell your story.

Why Does Custom Photography Cost More?

The digital revolutionhas brought amazing flexibility and ability to control various factors duringthe image taking and making process. Photographers, the hobbyist, theprofessional, the amateur all benefit from this ability to manipulatepixels. However, with flexibility comes a price. Digital cameraequipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its’lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, thetime it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into creating awork of photographic art.

We all know that youcan go to the local Walgreen’s and pay a $1.99 for a print – as a client youmay wonder why you may pay upwards of $50, $70, $90 for a custom photographyprint. Photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:

“How in the world canyou charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at x store?”

The truth of thematter is the answer to this question is multifaceted. Much of the costof a photographic print produced by a professional photographer has a lot to dowith the time, equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of thephotographer not to mention expertise and the usual costs of running alegitimate business.

The cost of TIME

Approaching it from atime standpoint, let’s imagine that you have hired a photographer who has workthat you love. This photographer is traveling an hour to your destinationto photograph your session. Here is an example of a time break down:

· session prep time (30mins – 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehiclechecks)

· 30 min - one hour travel timeTO session

· 15-30 minutes preptime at client’s home or location

· 60 minutes-2 hourswith client photographing subject

· 30 min - one hour travel timeFROM session

· 30-45 minutesuploading time from digital cards from camera to computer

· 30-45 minutes timespent backing up the original images

· 2-5 hours editing timeto present you with a diverse gallery of edited images

· 1 hour prep timegetting ready for ordering

· 2-3 hours time withclient for ordering images

· 1 hour sorting throughand checking order

· 30 minutes-1 hour preptime for delivery

· 30 minutes-1 hourgetting order shipped

· any additional phonetime or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues

In this example, thetime spent per client can range from just under 13 hours to 19 hours –dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicatedonly to ONE session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for thephoto shoot (aka SESSION FEE) you are not just paying for the two hours ofsession time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time foryour session.

The COSTS of Maintaining a Custom Photography Business:

Regarding equipmentcosts, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good opticalquality lenses and digital storage mediums and computer set up can run from$10,000-$30,000 costs dependent on the photographer. Even though you canpurchase a really good quality digital SLR forabout $2100 there are still other costs related to photography. A goodlens for portrait photography can run from $900 to $2500. A dependablecomputer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run$2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer.

Then come lab costsfor specialty products. A good photographer knows the lab is integral totheir success. Photography labs dedicated to the professionalphotographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allowsthe custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you,the discerning client.

Discussion other costsof running a photography business could take awhile so we’ll skip many of theintricate details. There is of course much more: including costs ofrunning the business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownershipof a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costsof sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

APPLES to ORANGES toBANANAS:

Often times clientswill mention to their photographer that X studio in the mall/department storeonly charges $19.99 for an 8×10 “sheet” or they may mention other thingsrelated to discount photography chains. The fact is those discount chainsmake their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service. In February2007 leased photography retail space by a rather well known discount departmentstore that started in Arkansas closed down 500 of their portrait studios acrossthe nation? The reason is simple, you cannot make money on 99¢“professional” prints if you do not sell enough of them. Interestinglyenough – those same studios that offer the loss leader packages often chargemuch much more for their a la carte pricing (as high as $40-50 for an8×10). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portraitservices in the first place was to get you, the savvy consumer, in throughtheir door so that you could spend more money with them in otherdepartments. Your “PORTRAITS” are considered the “loss leader”.

Going to a chainstudio, as a consumer, you don’t have the benefit of 1:1 attention for 2 hoursat your home where your child is allowed to explore, play and be comfortable intheir home environment, nor do you get the experience that many custom photographersare known for or the lovely captures of natural expressions. You simplyget a bare bones, “SAY CHEESE” experience. Keep this in mind whenselecting a photographer.

REPUTATION/EXPERTISEof the PHOTOGRAPHER:

Being in demand, beingwell known for quality work, having a good reputation often costs time on thephotographer’s part. Their expertise comes at a cost, their time learningtheir craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment putforth on their end to create a persona about their business that oozesprofessionalism. A great number of photographers go a very long time fromthe time that they purchase their first good camera to making money at thebusiness of photography. Many photographers, when first starting out,rush in thinking that the business will be easily profitable in no time, howexpensive could it be to get a camera and use it to create their dream? They often neglect to factor in the cost of business, the cost of equipment,software, backups, etc..

Being of soundreputation, a better professional photographer knows that they must alwaysreinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. To create good work good equipment, reliable equipment, back up equipment is anecessity. The photographer who desires to be known as better/best/unparalleledreputation-wise knows that the most important thing they can do for theirbusiness is reliability and dependability. This is how reputations getbuilt. Good work often is a wonderful side product of building that goodreputation.

I hope this (lengthy)article helps shed some light on WHY a custom photographer is a better choicefor your family’s memories. The photographs that are produced as a resultof the professionalism and dedication that your photographer has will becherished for a lifetime (or more) and great thought and consideration shouldbe placed into hiring who is right for your family’s most precious investment.

Custom Photography is something "special"

Custom photography is more of a luxury than your entry level cookie cutterchain experience.

Custom photography truly is not for everyone, itrequires a level of commitment, investment in time and money, forethoughtand planning on the part of the subject/client and requires a larger timecommitment for the photographer as well.

Clients who enjoy taking a more active role in the creation of theirfamilies’ memories have the desire to have portrait art that is trulypersonalized. These more discerning clients have been known to budget andallot time for a custom photography session. Many clients opt for it tobe a once a year special experience, some opt to have custom photographysessions done to record their child's stages in life. Having said this,it is clear that custom photography is not in everyone’s budget, it issomething that most families save for to splurge on from time to time tomemorialize their children as they really are (not posed and primped inthe cookie cutter studio setting).

There is a great deal of time involved in creating high end customphotography sessions for a client. The luxury of great service, betterchoices and a superb end product. The result of all this are heirloomquality images. The time invested at the session is only a small portion of time involved in this process.

Custom photography has been likened to purchasing a fine vehicle. Toget to point B from A let's face it, even a bus ride would suffice. Ifyou want to luxuriate in a finely appointed vehicle, customizing your ownexperience by listening to smooth jazz while sitting in a climate controlledsetting adjusted purely for your comfort in a body hugging leather interior,perhaps that Lexus you so desire is your cup of tea. Customphotography is much the same cup of tea. It is the Lexus of thephotography world. It is where the intangibles make the experience trulywonderful and the images themselves make the investment of money and time trulyworthwhile.

Custom photography can be broken down into even more levels. There areon location, studio, mixed studio/on location, specialty location anddestination type photographers. The beauty of custom photography is inthe choices and in the luxury of those options. The customized servicelevel you are sure to experience will be amazing. The knowledge that yourfinal images are the result of someone caring about those moments so much thatthey take extra time ensuring that the artwork you receive is good enough tostand by with their name on it. That level of quality andcommitment is all but lost in the age of "mass produced,""mass marketed," corporate "everyone is a number". Custom photography is based on being unique to you. How great anexperience would be, to be able to sit back and allow a photographer todo this highly custom work for images that you will most likely cherish for alifetime?

Keep in mind more than anything that the Lexus will never appreciate invalue the way your portraits will. The portrait art you become investedin from your custom photographer will no doubt increase in value and becomemore priceless as the years pass.

The C Family 2011

I had the opportunity to spend a brief couple of hours with this family. 1/2 of this group currently lives in New Jersey and they came to Texas for the Thanksgiving holiday.

What a GREAT group!

Wild, and crazy, and happy, and such an amazing family.

It was super cold the day I was scheduled to come over for their family session. Regardless, they were all headed home the following day.

It was an opportunity we weren't going to get again.

So...we made the best of it, and I think it TOTALLY paid off.

Fun Families

Usually, towards the end of every family session, when the kiddos are OVER having my camera in their face...we take a few minutes just to be silly.

Some times, you get some great faces.

I love this family!

The V Family has been in our lives for the last 4 years. They are amazing and goofy all at the same time. They are always up for anything suggested...even if they aren't quite sure about it.

Dad (like most dads) doesn't like to do pictures. However, he's a good sport at least every other year. Just to make momma happy.

She loves him...really, she does!

They are a pretty awesome family and I'm so glad that I get to call them friends as well as clients.

Coincidences are a funny thing...I met a lady a month or so ago for coffee..she had an appointment that afternoon with another lady...who just happened to be looking for a photographer.

Yay for networking!

I finally got to meet this entire family. My first thought when they piled out of the car...holy moly those are tall boys.

6'8" and 6'7" i think is what she told me. Regardless...they are REALLY tall. :)

What I left thinking...what a great family! All 4 kids are super sweet, very respectful, and really tolerant of their moms...even when they are fussing over their clothes and smiles.

The B Family 2011 {Kellery Family Photography}

I have loved this family from the moment I met them ...almost 5 years ago.

It is incredible to me how beautiful their sweet kids are.

I know that twins have their own "thing"...but seriously, these boys adore each other.

You can't quite tell, but there is one significant difference between the two. One just lost his bottom two front teeth the week before we met for their session. I wish his smiled showed just how toothless he really is :)

The Frugal Mom's kiddos

If you are into couponing...you just might recognize this name of this momma.

I had the great privilege of meeting The Frugal Mom today. We spent some time this afternoon playing with her three amazing kids

Because really...that's my job! I get to play around with kids. It's pretty great.

Meet Logan.

He is the big brother. Age 7. Pretty cool guy. He's all boy. They never want to have their pictures taken, but I think he hung in there like a trooper and looks super handsome.

This is Ava.

I love her name! Ava is 4 and is just as sweet as they come. She and I could have hung out all day, played dress up and rocked it out in front of the camera. She is so beautiful.

Baby brother Blake is two. He knows his manners and even though he was sleepy when they arrived he popped his head right up and started talking to me. So sweet.

The C Family 2011

She has been asking for family pictures...for quite a while now.

He is your typical husband/dad...they don't ever enjoy pictures.

However...in our consultation meeting...I noticed he was already thinking about where the pictures would go in the house. He asked how big I could print one...my response: "Bigger than you will need" :)

The day of the session finally arrived this past weekend...poor mom was a nervous wreck! She wanted these to turn out so great.

I think she got her wish!

They have a very handsome son...and they are super proud of him. I loved watching them interact with him. He's just ALMOST too cool for mom and dad. Almost.

While waiting for everyone to change their clothes and prepare to head to our second location, I heard Dad talking to his son. Boys/Men....let's face it, they never really like taking pictures. They do it to keep momma happy...and that is how it should be. What made my heart smile was him telling his son "we need to spoil her a little more often"

Dad...I do believe you might have just banked some serious brownie points after this past weekend :)

The W Family 2011

The W Family is pretty awesome...but poor dad, he is a little bit outnumbered.

I met this family before the school year started. I had been late to a end of summer party and when I got back I was told that some parents had run my son up to the band party. They had a couple of girls in the band as well....hmmm. Girls...freshman year...oh goodness.

When the parents came back to the party we were still at, the dad told us that our son was the first boy, other than him, to have been in their car.

Oh man! the pressure! Please son of mine, please have been on your best behavior.

He was.

Momma W took advantage of a special I was running and booked their family pictures. I am so glad she did. I had the honor to spend some time with them a couple of weeks ago.

What a sweet family.

The W Family has 4 daughters. Four BEAUTIFUL daughters.

From Chaos to Grace: To appreciate life...

Inspired: Dana Suggs

I met Dana on Facebook thru ...well, I don't really know how we were connected. She was a photograher in Tulsa. She knew a friend of mine, somehow she knew my sister in law, and she took beautiful pictures.

A few months later, I heard about this fantastic workshop in Tulsa...so I stalked them and found out they were giving away free seats to a workshop. I knew Dana wanted to go..so without ever having talked to her before, i found her phone number, told her quickly who i was and how to get a free seat...and prayed she would get one before they ended the contest.

She did.

We met. We laughed. We learned. We became friends.

Fast forward a few months, I was headed back home and told her I would be in town and would love to catch up. She had a twin newborn session scheduled and offered, so kindly, to let me tag along.

She is amazig like that.

We laughed. We worked hard. We learned. We became even better friends.

We don't talk too often, but we really don't need to. We are there for each other in our artistic/nonbusiness melt downs... There for each other to vent. Happy to brag to each other about our accomplishments. Proud of each other at all times.

This year, Dana was given a new project. She and her family felt led to be foster parents. They have been blessed with 3 children. Read this blog post to hear the amazing story about how their sweet family grew so suddently. From Chaos to Grace: God's sense of humor

I am so very proud of her. She is such a remarkable woman and these 3 little children are so incredibly blessed to have her loving them every day and every moment.

Dana posted a few weeks ago she was going on vacation...uh jealous!!! They were going to Florida to the beach - oh how I love the beach. I was so excited for her. They had some obstacles to overcome with the foster children, but they got the details worked out.

She posted pictures. She facebooked. I got to live vicariously through her facebook and her status updates. Then one day I was checking my Facebook, and something was wrong. Something had happened to the baby.

Prayers were said all around the world.

I finally got through the blog post that she wrote taking us through each moment and each heartbreaking minute. Here is my disclaimer: it is heartbreaking. However, the end result is good and positive. Just brace yourself.

Dana continues to face the struggles and joys of fostering. I cannot imagine the turmoil she faces every day. I cannot imagine how good it feels in her heart with each and every positive step forward.

Dana, you are amazing and I just know that wonderful things are in store for you and your family....of 8.

And....they're back! Archer Family - October 2011

The Archer Family ... if you know them, they have left a lasting impression on you. I was thinking the other day - I have known this family since before they were a family.

I love them so incredibly much!

A season, a reason, or a lifetime...

They are for sure the last two

Cherie understands how precious pictures are. She drives Matt crazy with them, because we do them a couple times a year. However, I know better...he is super proud of his family and loves to show them off.

Cherie said it perfectly the other day

"When you can't remember a specific moment in your life, your picture are there to remind you"

Family pictures this time around are a little different. They have the amazing opportunity to have a foreign exchange student living with them.

We call him Jakob...because frankly, none of us Americans can say his first name correctly.

Jakob is this amazing kid who has fit in so perfectly with their family.

Here is what I know about Jakob in the 2-3 months he has been here

He LOVES American Football

I mean - he REALLY loves it. I think he could easily put some grown men to shame with the stats that he knows.

He LOVES hamburgers

Well, maybe just food in general...but hamburgers, watch out!

He is happy

He always has a smile on his face

He is a pretty funny guy

I love to listen to him crack jokes with Matt and the kids

Jakob is a perfect addition to the Archer Family. He already fights with TJ & Tatum like a real brother would - you would never know he has only been here a short amount of time.

Oh...and let's not forget about Stoney.

Cherie will tell you that he is THE perfect dog

He was off his game on picture day...but he's still pretty cute!

Inspiration Through Art {Cayden}

If you have followed me over the last couple of years, you already know that I am a part of an amazing organization called Inspiration Through Art. I have the honor to be amongst some fabulous photographers in this group that use our art to give families a little extra love.

"Our mission at Inspiration Through Art is to help provide and capture memories for families who are dealing with hectic schedules due to having a child who is suffering from a serious illness or life altering disability. We are here to offer emotional support through the beauty and expression art has to offer, as a way of healing and coping. We understand that in the midst of being thrown a diagnosis and having to switch from a “normal” life to a life that is totally different, and often scary, things like getting photos taken is sometimes a huge challenge and is one of the last things families are thinking about. But when everything is done, and either the child has reached the end of their battle, or has proven the odds against it many wish they had more time to stop, and capture the journey that they lived through for so long."

A few months ago I was contacted by Cayden's mom. She had applied to ITA and had chosen me to be her photographer. I am so glad she did. I fell in love with all the sweet faces staring back at me when I met them this past weekend.

Cayden and his brother DJ have both been diagnosed with diabetes. Cayden actually has an insulin pump, he looked at me a little funny when I asked to see it. I think these kids are so brave to deal with the circumstances that they have been given, all while having the biggest, brightest, sometimes toothless, smiles on their face.

Here is a little of how mom described her sweet kiddos.

"Landon is the oldest and my first, he is smart kid and always concerned about his little brother. He LOVES legos! Cayden is my baby and is my little hero. He is brave, strong, and very much all boy. He loves anything country. DJ is my step son, he is a few months younger then Landon, he was recently diagnosed with diabetes as well. He likes to talk. Kailey is my step daughter, she is very much a drama queen and princess. She seriously thinks the world revolves around her."

Uh...mom, she is the only girl surrounded by 3 brothers...it IS all about her :)

J Family 2011

I have been lucky enough to not only photograph this family from their beginning, but I am also friends with them. I have watched their story unfold. With each chapter in their story, I am more and more proud of them.

They have proven that love really can conquer anything.

Together, they can take on the world.

Sweet, sweet Evan. I am so proud of his pictures. Up until probably 6 months ago, he wouldn't look in my direction must less talk to me. Something changed somewhere along the way. Now...he runs up and gives me a great big hug each time he sees me.

He makes me heart smile each time I get to see him.

I love all of my clients. I especially love it when clients become amazing friends. I love that I get to be a part of their lives and see how they grow and change.

I have said before that our lives are like a story. When I have the distinct honor to be a part of that story, or even just a chapter in your story...I am beyond happy.

This family is beautiful. One of the greatest things about them is the love for their boys.

This past weekend I was invited to photograph a 40th Birthday Party. Tastefully Unique, a full catering and event planning company was taking care of this birthday boy! That is FOR SURE!

The theme of the birthday party was Mardi Gras. There was an amazing jazz band, decorated like you can't imagine. If I hadn't known better, I would have told you that I walked into a pretty awesome wedding reception. The floral arrangements were stunning, the food was amazing, the atmosphere was perfect.

These ladies know how to do it RIGHT! Teresa and Tammy are the owners of Tastefully Unique, however, they understand that it takes a village. They have taken the best from the community and have pulled together an amazing company.

Inspired: FickleZeal

I haven't done a post about what inspires me in a really long time. Today, I was reminded of a photographer that always manages to touch my heart.

FickleZeal is a husband and wife photography team. They have such a passion for children with Down Syndrome. They shoot much more than that...however, it is these sessions that always push me to work harder at what I do.

I truly belive that as photographers it is our responsibility...and maybe that isn't the right word...but it is our job to capture our clients in all of their glory. Kids are especially difficult sometimes. They may be hungry by the time they get to the session, or tired, or just in a cranky mood for the day. They might be shy, or nervous, or unable to communicate with me.

However, at the end of each session, I love it when the kids have warmed up and we have been able to spend some time together and really have fun. When I talk to a parent as they are viewing their session and they are so surprised that I was able to get the personalities of their children, after they were just positive that the session had been a disaster...that is what makes me love my job.

FickleZeal does amazing work. I would completely recommend them for any type of session. I know I know...I am a photographer, why in the world would I recommend another company??

Because I believe in them. I admire them and they never fail to inspire me.

I don't get to shoot in my studio often. Sometimes I get to travel to a clients home and we set up a little mini studio wherever we can make room.

This sweet girl is full of life...and has the BEST name ever :)

Brooke's mommy wanted some pictures in her dance costume's for this year so we set up shop and rocked it out!

She was pretty much over it at this point!

They only last so long at this age :)

Jennifer & Lui Wedding {Dallas Wedding Photography}

Jennifer & Lui are MARRIED! {Dallas Wedding photography}

Jennifer & Lui got married this past Saturday and the day could not have been any more beautiful. Texas weather can be brutal and just two nights before we had a wild storm. My fingers were crossed for no rain...and we were not dissapointed. There was not a cloud in the sky and it was actually a little cool, no one melted.

The two newlyweds are on their honeymoon right now, however I wanted to post just a couple of images from Saturday that jumped out and screamed AMAZING to me.

The wedding ceremony took place at St. Monica Church in Dallas and the reception was held at La Buena Vida Vineyards in Grapevine.

We had some extra time between the two events so we headed over to The Mustangs of Las Colinas to have some fun with the bridal party.

It's that time of year. School is back in session. Football is going strong. The Holidays are right around the corner.

This is probably one of my favorite times of year. The weather is amazing and mom's have started thinking about getting their families ready for their family pictures. Dad's...of course they dread it, but still...how can you not love looking at the images seeing how beautiful your family is??

Fstop Frenzy Weekly Challenge {HOPE}

I don't enter a lot of challenges...because truth be told, i'm awful at staying committed to doing something on a regular basis.

However, Fstop Frenzy was started by two women that I admire so much. So...in an attempt to improve my photography and really...get some consistency in my life of chaos :) I am going to see if I can keep up with these two girls and their weekly challenge.

This is Week 2 and it's all about HOPE. My blog post yesterday was all about hope and prayer. It was also a little (or a LOT) sad. So I am going a different direction with my version of HOPE.

This little girl makes me WORK when we get together for pictures. She doesn't enjoy them and it's really such a shame because she is so very beautiful! Every once in a while I get a great picture of her and her sweet little smile truly comes out...and it gives me hope. Hope that one day she will let this sweet little smile shine thru ...all the time.

Inspiration Through Art {Emma}

Inspiration Through Art is a group that I am affiliated with. Here is the quick rundown on this group:

Inspiration Through Art was founded in January 2008 by Felicia Reinhard, made up of professional photographers, artists, children, and other volunteers nationwide that provide free programs and services to our nations heroes. Through the power of photography and the gift of art we are giving back and taking a stand for these children who sometimes feel forgotten because of their illnesses. We are here to let them know that they are heroes to many, and to share their inspirational stories and photos with the world.

I have been blessed with two amazing families over the last couple of years and was recently contacted by two more. There are so many great photographers that are a part of this group - that I am truly amazed when families choose me. I have one scheduled for a little later in the year...when it cools off - since it feels like we all might melt like a box of crayons left in the back seat of a car.

However, I have been working with Emma's mommy over the last couple of weeks to get their session scheduled as soon as possible. The email that I received truly broke my heart. It is so sad to me that these sweet little children struggle with so much. They truly are little hero's for being brave and strong and still keeping a smile on their face in the midst of such enormous battles.

Emma's mommy wrote:

"Our Emma was diagnosed with A chromoshomal disorder, Trachesostomy, malformation of the brain, multicystic diaplastic kidney and several other issues. She was born on 5-14-11 and she was in the NICU for 9 weeks. She has only been home 3 weeks and will go back to the hospital for another month on 9-9-11 for open heart surgery."

I seriously wanted to rush straight over and just hug this family and love on them.

A few days later, i received another email telling me that little Emma had been Care-flighted to the hospital because her little heart rate was too fast and they couldn't get it to come down. She was starting to show signs of congestive heart failure. It was early in the morning when I received this email and I was driving to Dallas for a big day filled full of 6 photo shoots. They were going to schedule heart surgery in about 6 weeks and she wanted to get the session done prior to that surgery.

I immediately called Emma's mom and talked to her for a few minutes and told her that I was sending lots of good thoughts and prayers her way. Again, I would have given anything to rush to the hospital and envelope them in love and prayers. They were waiting for the cardio dr to come back and talk with them about how to move forward.

I received an update this past Saturday letting me know that Emma was going to have her heart surgery this Tuesday (tomorrow). I am so sad that we will not get to meet before her pictures. However, I am so thankful that she is in the best place possible to receive the care that she needs. I am so very excited to meet this brave little girl and the family that has held hands together and prayed over her.

It is families like Emma's that remind me why I love photography. With something so simple, I can give them capture this moment in time for them. I am so blessed because of the families that I am lucky enough to meet through Inspiration Through Art.

Until I have the amazing honor to meet Emma face to face and hug her sweet little self...please stop for a moment today and tomorrow and say a prayer with me that God will watch over this beautiful little girl and bring her thru her surgery stronger and ready to conquer the next battle she must face.

I Heart Faces {Beautiful Eyes}

This week's theme over at I Heart Faces is beautiful eyes. I have been working on a couple of projects with studio lighting. When all else fails and there are no willing and able models (i.e. kids running around hiding from me when I pick up the camera) I am forced to resort to getting in front of the camera myself.

While this is NOT my favorite thing to do, it lets me remember what it feels like to be in front of the camera. It reminds me of those insecurities that I think we all face each time we have our pictures taken.

Back to the challenge...

This week over at I Heart Faces, the focus is on beautiful eyes. As I was looking thru images I could use for this challenge, my daughter and husband both voted for this one.

how big is an 8x10 after it's all said and done?

Your session is complete, your saw your gallery and are in love with your pictures...now, it's time to order.

"I want a BIG 8x10", she said.

How many times have you placed your portrait order thinking that an 8x10 is going to be the perfect size. You might even have the perfect place for it...right over the couch.

You get it home and framed and are so proud of it. You mark the perfect place, hang the image, step back and...wait..that might just not work.

Houston Family {Inspiration Through Art Photographer, Plano, TX}

Jim and Laura have been blessed with three amazing children: Emma, Sophie, and Nate. They also face some challenges that you might not see at your first glance. Nate is challenged with Type 1 Diabetes and Sophie battles Crohn's Disease. They are beautiful children; full of life, full of energy, and ready to face the world.

Nate is three years old and is so very proud of it. He is inquisitive and always appears to be on an adventure. While mom and I talked, he would take off around the park checking things out. He is super sweet and can has the most amazing blue eyes.

Sophie is precious. Mom and I were talking about her disease and I was informed that up until that week, she had been in remission. Since our session, little Sophie has had a really rough few days. She was a trooper through the full session and never complained about being out in the heat.

Emma is the oldest child. She is healthy and I would imagine a big help to her mom and dad. She is beautiful and is going to become an incredibly beautiful young lady. She is a great big sister. She watches over her sister and brother with a careful eye, but still maintains an innocence that only a child can - even in the midst of the chaos that surrounds this family.

Throughout all the daily struggles the Houston Family is faced with...they are passionate, happy, and full of an incredible love.

I am honored to be the chosen photograher for the Houston Family and hope they know that their strength inspires me. They have touched my heart like only Hero's can.

Kennedy {Burleson, TX Child Photography}

Beautiful Kennedy...is a quiet little girl. She takes a while to warm up to new people. She's a tough crowd when it comes to telling jokes.

Good thing her mamma knew how to get her laughing... stinky things and funny noises...it's gets them every time!

Shelbi is her best friend...they even coordinated their outfits. Mamma made the dress and the accessories for both Kennedy and Shelbi

This one makes my heart smile...it is so innocent and so sweet.

Jessica Graduates {Tulsa, OK Senior Photography}

Payton {Newborn Photography; Trophy Club, TX}

Meet little Payton. You met their mommy and daddy HERE

Sweet Payton was only 10 days new when I had the honor of spending some time with her. She was little bitty and snuggly and all the great things that newborns are. What she was not.....was sleepy. But awake or asleep, she was happy and beautiful.

Mom and Dad are so blessed to welcome Payton into their world. She is a lucky little girl to have two parents that adore her.

Let me also point out one thing for all new parents considering newborn photographers. Finding a place in your home...or the home you choose to have your newborn session take place...is the key to beautful images. I do all newborn sessions with natural light.

What does that mean? That means that I do not use flashes or studio lighting. I find a place in your home that has a LOT of light coming in. It might be right inside your front/back door. It might be in your living room that has beautiful sunlight streaming in. For Payton's session...the upstairs of their home had this amazing sky light that lit up the hallway like you just can't imagine.

All images you see are strictly with the natural light that was available in their home.

So...... if you are going to schedule a newborn session. Take a look around first and make sure that you have someone in your home that has good sunlight coming in. It truly doesn't matter what the house or the room looks like...I bet you never would have guessed all of these were done in a hallway.

Ok...sorry - back to this beautiful little girl! Taylor (mommy) and I were talking and she made the comment that she never thought she would dress her daughter up in pink and ruffles...

Aren't you as glad as I am that she did??? Just beautiful. I think that one should be blown up to a big 30x40 canvas in Payton's room.

Roberts Wedding Sneak Peek

Owen Tilly {Newborn Photography; Tulsa, OK}

She is a precious little girl. With a name like Owen Tilly, how could she not be fabulous??

Little Owen was 19 days new...and wide awake.

The best part of my job...as I tell every mother that is stressing out because her little one won't go to sleep when we want them to....is that I get to snuggle with these amazing little bundles.

Newborn sessions are unpredictable. You never know how they will do. They could have slept all day every day and sure enough the day I arrive to do their session...they won't go to sleep no matter how much we snuggle, rock, bounce and shush them. Out of town clients have a slight disadvantage, because we really only have one shot to get the session done.

So little Ms. Owen didn't get near as many images as we would have hoped...but I love the ones we did capture.

Even the fussy ones. Because really...it happens.

Jesse Jennings

I have said it before, but I am truly blessed to meet the people that I do. I met Jesse Jennings about 3 years ago. My husband and I were eating dinner and Jesse was playing a live accoustic show. He is a great friend of some of our best friends.

Jesse truly has a voice that is amazing. He is so passionate about his music and you can see it in everything he does.
He is kind hearted and such a gentlemen.

Fast forward to a few months ago and we started talking about this super great opportunity that might happen for him..if it did, he was going to need to new photos.

{Woot Woot!! Holla! Heck yeah I'll do them!}

As it turns out...the great opportunity happened and now he is on hiw way to something big! So one evening a few weeks ago, we headed out for his session and I am so happy with the end result. Jesse is such a great person, inside and out. He is super talented and one day soon will take this world by storm.

In the meantime...I'll listen to his music as I drive to and from work and really any chance I get. I'll go watch him perform when I can...and know that one day...he will amaze the world with his voice, his heart, and his kind soul.

We met in the Fort Worth Stockyards and her little guy instantly scoped out the balloon guy.

One thing I have learned over the years....let the kids have fun. The pictures will be WAY better when they get to goof off in between the serious pictures. They have more fun...and quite honestly, so do I!

Look at this big girl! Isn't she precious?

The first time I had the pleasure of meeting her...she looked like this

Now, she is full of smiles

and giggles

and raspberries.

Ava has just figured out how to sit up, and for the most part she did fabulous. We only had a few times were she looked like a tree being tipped over in a forrest. Sweet thing would just sloooooowwwwwwwly fall over.

She is also a very determined little girl

One hour, 4 outfit changes and a couple of crazy people making faces at her...I think she did remarkable.

One of my dearest friends, Hattie, got married this past weekend. We did her bridals a couple of weeks ago. 15 minutes was all we got before it started storming. But 15 minutes was all we needed... isn't she lovely?

Cadence

Cadence is the beautiful daughter of one of my favorite bride and grooms. During the wedding, I think she was very overwhelmed with all that was going on that day. It was a big day. Her mommy and daddy were having a party and there were a LOT of people hanging around. Oooohing and Ahhhing over how precious this little girl was.

Everyone watched her walk down the aisle, and bless her little heart... she was not interested in leaving his side.

She watched as they stood in the front of the room and talked to each other and even got to steal a little glance from the both and they smiled so big as she waved to them from her seat.

Later on in the night, people danced and laughed and had so much fun. Cadence got to dance with her daddy and her mommy too.

But I think she had the most fun when everyone started to leave and there was plenty of room for her to dance around the floor... and boy did she dance. She can break dance like no other!

Throughout the entire evening and night..she really wasn't happy about the camera, at all. Her oh so fabulous mommy and I set up a session where it was completely focused on Cadence. She got to bring her two favorite bears and even a couple of toys.

We blew bubbles

We watched the ducks in the river

We just hung out and talked like girls do.

Cadence you are a beautiful little girl and I know your mommy and daddy love you so very much!

There are some times as a photographer when you meet someone who just touches your heart. They don't talk back. They stay in the pose you put them in. They don't just go with the flow and don't feel awkward at all. It's clients like this, that we as photographers love.

Kids are fun, families are beautiful, brides are inspiring...but these clients...

Some days, you just can't beat clients like these.
